This watercolor series is the work of the renowned architectural illustrator, Michael McCann. They were painted from the architectural drawings of Michael Vergason, the Memorial designer.

The Memorial relative to the U.S. Capitol
The Memorial's two-acre site, located adjacent to the Mall and across Independence Avenue from the U.S. Botanic Gardens, will serve as a key landmark at the northern boundary of the South Capitol Street revitalization project.

Looking inward from Memorial's north entrance
Framed by walls of glass and marble, the Memorial will embody the disabled veterans' experience with an interplay of elements symbolizing fragility and strength, loss and renewal.

The Memorial's focal point will be a star-shaped reflecting pool with an eternal flame rising from its center. Its strong geometric form structures the memorial site.

The Memorial's proximity to the Capitol serves as a constant reminder to America's representatives of the true cost of conflict. The National Capitol Planning Commission (NCPC) recognized this when it noted that the Memorial will serve as a reminder to legislators of the human costs of their decisions concerning military action as well as the need for health and rehabilitation of those injured in defense of our country.
