| As of June 2008 Deployed: 1.6 M (includes OIF deployments) Deaths: 513 Wounded: 2,071 On September 11th, 2001 the United States was attacked by Al Qaeda terrorists on American soil. Consequently, U.S. forces responded by attacking Al Qaeda bases in Afghanistan and progressed by attempting to force the pro-Al Qaeda Taliban from power. The initial military objectives, stated by President George W. Bush, were the destruction of terrorist training camps and infrastructure in Afghanistan, the capture of al-Qaeda leaders and the cessation of terrorist activities in Afghanistan.
