Mexican American War (1846 – 1848)
| American Combatants: 79,000 American Casualties: 13,000 The Mexican-American War was a military conflict between the United States and Mexico resulting from the U.S. annexation of Texas. Mexico considered Texas a rebel province, and as such, declined to meet with U.S. negotiators to settle the outstanding issues revolving around the land. Democrats who believed in Manifest Destiny were large supporters of this war, while Mexicans believed that supporting this conflict was important for national pride. One outcome of this war was the U.S. obtaining two additional Mexican territories: Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico, under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The loss of territory in Mexico resulted in policies to actively colonize their remaining northern territories to prevent further losses. Click here to return to Conflicts. |
